Speaking from experience, these are some tips for using an inflatable paddle board to avoid common mistakes and pitfalls. If your looking for my list of the best inflatable paddle boards find it here.
Tip 1: The air valve will lock open and closed
Maybe this is common sense to everyone else, but I thought the air valve on my paddle board was broken after a few uses because I’d blow up my board and then as soon as I removed the pump to close the valve, all the air I’d just pumped into the board would come gushing out. It was super frustrating and I ended up paddling a few times on a partly inflated board because I couldn’t keep air in it. Turns out all I had to do was turn the valve knob counter clockwise and that locked it in the closed position instead of being locked in open. Very simple fix to a frustrating problem. All I had to do was read my owners manual.
Tip 2: Buy an electric pump
If you are going to be paddling somewhere that you can blow up your board next to your car then the electric pump is SO worth the money. You connect the hose, set the pressure you want and then the pump does it’s thing. It even automatically turns off once your desired PSI. No more tired arms before you start your paddle.
Tip 3: Do not lay an inflated paddle board on hot sand or in the hot sun outside of the water.
Laying a fully inflated paddle board on hot sand will lead to your board popping. The hot sand or ground heats up and expands the air inside, leading to over inflation and can pop your board.
Tip 4: Inflate your paddle board to the proper PSI
Taking your board out when it’s not inflated to the proper PSI will lead to a a frustrating paddle. It’s hard to stay stable on a improperly inflated board and the board also loses it’s performance.
Tip 5: Use a leash
Not all inflatable SUPs come with a leash, but it’s important to paddle with one so that you stay tethered to your board if you fall off. You don’t have to buy the leash that matches your board. Look for one that is comfortable and maybe has some neat features, such as a key pocket.
Tip 6: Dont leave your packed-up paddle board in a hot car
It’s tempting to just leave your paddle board packed up all nice and snug in your car, but avoid the temptation. The hot sun will wear on the materials, such as the glue that hold it together and can cause your board to breakdown much faster.
Tip 7: Register your board with the manufacturer
Most manufacturers will give you 30 days to register your board and ensure that it’s covered by the warranty (if they offer one). An inflatable paddleboard is an expensive purchase, so make sure you’ve got a warranty on it if it’s offered.
Tip 8: Do your research!
Not all boards are alike, so make sure you do your research before purchasing an inflatable SUP to make sure you get one that fits your budget and your lifestyle. See some of my favorites here.
